01 marsen jules – the sound of one lip kissing
this is the unbelievable opener to the kompakt’s new pop ambient compilation.  fry on this stunner!!
02 pantha du prince – a nomads retreat
from the hardest hitting electronic music album i have heard in a long time.. the electroacoustic and original beat elements just put this over the top for me in a big way.  reminds me of another favorite act, alex connor of shermstixx.
03 ben frost – killshot
when i first heard this track i thought my ears were splitting apart.. i kept asking others if they heard it the same way i do, but it’s difficult to explain.  something about when that side chain bass compression pops out of that garbage loop.
04 robbie basho – ackerman special
a charming interlude from the man who has redefined guitar for me.  anyone unfamiliar with takoma’s guitar gods should feel free to contact me for recommendations.
05 tape – mothwings
this record is thoroughly technical and thoughtfully made.   it’s been in my playlist for nearly a year.
06 klimek – standing ausser on the beach gefahr
this was on a mix i made for my newborn son Oliver.  i like to think it’s his favorite mix ever.
07 jack rose – blues for percy danforth
rip jack rose
08 leyland kirby – don’t sleep, i am not what i seem
i got turned on to this after getting hooked on the cd he released on install records as the caretaker.  it’s like budd/eno taken to another level, 2009 haunt.
09 chieko mori – spiral wave
how do i not have a koto?  inspirational instrument.
10 jozef van wissem- how the soul has arrived at understanding of her nothingness
when we played with jozef it was really the silence between the notes that came across.  this piece approximates that.
11 thomas koner – 35° 40′ N 139° 42′ E (hour one)
impressive use of field recordings, very minimal.  there’s something about the vibe of this record..  traces of white noise gone right.
12 cluster – protrea
from cluster’s new record!  i think it actually sounds a bit like saudade.
13 jonathan – black to comm
serenity in the beautiful deathgaze melodies. i instantly thought of jason when i heard this track.
14 richard skelton – noon hill wood
reverse steve reich and play at half speed on violins and creaky doors.
15 the neon boys – time
the only track on this mix with vocals, i “get” this track.. “only time can write a song that’s really really real the best a man can say is how its play on him does feel even though he only knows as much as time to him reveals”

It is here.

This is a great cause and we are psyched that they requested our music for the background. Enjoy!

MONSTER CHAIN

I’m ridiculously fucking excited to finally get a listen to the debut album from Saudade, the Portland duo who are better than anyone else in the world at dragging insane levels of beauty and heartache from layers of terrifying ambient noise. It’s a monstrous world Saudade conjure up in their mostly instrumental tracks; it feels like music from beyond the frontiers: sonically, psychologically, whatever. You could draw lines between this and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, but there’s an unpredictability that separates Saudade from GY!BE’s controlled, classically informed bleakness: this feels like freefalling, exhilarating and ghastly. I could be uninformed, but really, it feels like there’s not anyone else in the world that walks this line between sound art and visceral, immediate music.

Lookouts’ Journal is out November 10 on Arena Rock Recording Co. It’s one of the best albums of 2009.

PROVIDENCE

Oh fuck, EVOCATIVE. This is some hazed out space-age shit, like getting high through a motherboard in 2200. Pretty fucking creepy, too: the white noise builds and builds and the whole time there’s this melody way up high that’s all noble and righteous yet out of reach, like the human spirit facing the apocalypse or a lone astronaut adrift in a galaxy of evil. Wha? Sorry, I can’t stop thinking about how much better all my fave sci-fi flix would be if Saudade scored them. Also how much more traumatic. Did anyone see 28 Weeks Later? That movie would’ve been a shitload better if there was more Saudade and less Muse. ALTERNATIVE REFERENCE POINT: this track reminds me of TWO of my favourite Brian Eno songs: the vibe makes me think of Chance Meeting by Roxy Music and the melody is all The Fat Lady of Limbourg off Taking Tiger Mountain. PS, this song is beautiful. Portland stop ruling.
